Gear Review: Uncharted Supply Co. SEVENTY2® Pro Survival Kit

Posted by Dan Goodman on 4th Nov 2020

For as many adventures that go exactly as planned, there are some that end with you feeling like there was never a plan in the first place.

Uncharted Supply Co.’s SEVENTY2® Pro Survival Kit is for adventures in the latter category.

The SEVENTY2® Pro has everything you and a partner need to survive for 72 hours in an emergency — which is conveniently the same amount of time in which 95% of all survival situations are resolved. Of course, they also make it in the original version, designed as a survival system for one person, the SEVENTY2® Survival System.

Packed with survival gear including first aid materials, food, tools, a lightweight shelter, flashlights, a radio, a water filter, and much more, the SEVENTY2® Pro is a comprehensive survival kit for two that will keep you feeling prepared without looking like a prepper.

If that’s what you’ve been looking for, there may not be a better kit out there. You can stop now and go pick one up yourself — Uncharted Supply Co. SEVENTY2® PRO Survival System.

But if you want a full peek at everything inside, keep scrolling.

The Shell

You’ll buy the pack for the insert and the contents inside, but you’ll quickly realize that one of the most useful items is the shell itself.

To say it’s made from durable materials would be a massive understatement. Built using a 600D dual-coated tarpaulin fabric, the shell can hold up to rough handling in any environment without showing so much as a scratch, as evidenced by Uncharted’s recent durability video.

The SEVENTY2® Pro Insert

But, more than simply being a vessel for hauling the insert which holds all of your supplies, the shell is designed to be used on it’s own as well. With the insert having its own backpack straps, that leaves you free to utilize the shell both during an emergency and in your everyday life.

That’s 30 liters of waterproof storage space that you can take hiking, ski touring, snowmobiling, biking, and swimming.

Swimmer using the SEVENTY2 Pro Shell for flotation

Yes, we said swimming.

Since it’s 100% waterproof, it also doubles nicely as an emergency flotation device in the water. Let’s see your backpacking pack do that.

The Insert

When you first slide the insert out, you’ll notice the useful survival tips on the outside that detail the basics of first aid, emergency preparedness, how to stay warm, etc. If this seems unnecessary now, just wait until you find yourself in a survival situation. There’s a good chance you’ll appreciate it more when you’re tired, panicked, and not thinking clearly.

You’re here for the supplies, so we’ll go ahead and gloss over those instructions for now (you can always read them later), to get into the meat of it.

SEVENTY2® Pro Insert with survival instructions

Inside you’ll find an impeccably organized kit that evokes a sense of order among the chaos, even if you’re Marie Kondo-level obsessive.

We’ll break it down by category here.

First Aid

With a robust first aid kit, Uncharted’s very own First Aid Pro Kit, plus antibacterial wipes and SPF 50 sunscreen, this is a portion of the insert you’ll reach for time and time again.

It’s perfect for everything from long days spent hiking in the sun to management of minor cuts and scrapes, so you might need a resupply before you find yourself in any real emergencies.

Food

The Datrex survival bars might not be the first thing you’ll reach for when you forget to bring extra snacks on your next day hike, but that’s actually a good thing. It makes it more likely that they’ll still be in your bag should an emergency arise. Each bar packs 200 calories and has a 5-year shelf life, meaning that you have plenty of time to get into a pickle before they go bad. And since you get six per package, you’ll be able to ration them over the course of a few days if need be.

What’s Inside

  • 2 x 2,400 calorie Datrex survival bar packages

Tools

They say you can fix just about anything with duct tape. Unfortunately, in a survival situation, you’ll need to be able to do more than just fix things as they break. That’s why Uncharted threw in a full-tang knife, paracord, and a lightweight shovel which converts into a pickaxe.

And yes, there’s duct tape too.

What’s Inside

  • 1 x Full-tang knife with a bottle opener, glass breaker, and combo razor/serrated edge
  • 1 x Convertible carbon,steel shovel/pickaxe
  • 1 x 100 feet of paracord
  • 1 x Duct Tape Pack 5 yd x 1.8 in

Warmth

It’d be nice if every emergency happened in a temperate climate with no inclement weather. Unfortunately, weather is one of the primary driving forces behind survival situations. With extra layers for your extremities, hand warmers, and an ultralight shelter, this section has you covered.

What’s Inside

  • 2 x Acrylic Beanie
  • 2 x Insulated/waterproof gloves (pair)
  • 2 x Hand warmers (2-pack)
  • 1 x Waterproof mylar tent shelter

Water

A water filter is handy to have around for both emergencies and for more routine outdoor adventures. Of course, it’s great to have in the insert, but this lightweight water filtration system packs down small and weighs a measly three ounces, meaning it slips easily into just about any pack for any adventure.

What’s Inside

  • 1 x Sawyer mini water filter
  • 1 x Reusable squeeze pouch (16 fl oz.)
  • 1 x Filter tip cap
  • 1 x cleaning syringe

Air & Vision

For anyone who doesn’t live in a polluted city, these items might be the last things you would use outside of a survival situation. For those of us living in Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, or any other major city with variable air quality, the RZ M2 air masks inside might just become the most used item in this kit. And the included goggles are especially useful if you find yourself in a snowstorm having to cover ground or dislodging a stuck vehicle.

What’s Inside

  • 2 x Ballistic-rated goggles with adjustable strap
  • 2 x Chem lights
  • 2 x RZ M2 Air Masks with F1 active carbon filters

Power

Because no survival kit would be complete without one, Uncharted added a tri-band radio. And because they’re Uncharted, they made sure it also features a flashlight, which is powered by a hand crank, as well as a USB port, which is helpful for keeping your phone charged so you can call in the cavalry.

But wait, there’s more. Stored in their own conveniently labeled straps you’ll find a stainless steel water bottle, lightweight flashlight, stormproof matches with striker, and a multi-tool — rounding out this kit and equipping you for just about any situation you might be facing.

What’s Inside

  • 1 x 48-ounce, stainless-steel water bottle
  • 1 x Multitool
  • 1 x Stormproof match pack (Quantity: 25)
  • 1 x Submersible flashlight

Our Take

Have we mentioned how comprehensive this thing is?

For anyone who takes their survival seriously, aka anyone currently breathing, this kit has just about everything you could want for an emergency. Like with any grab-and-go kit, you should add in any additional medication, food items, or other supplies specific to your needs. And yes, there’s even a zippered compartment inside with space for those items as well.

An olive SEVENTY2® PRO on a shelf, ready for use

As an overall survival kit, that’s ready to go without you having to research all of this on your own, this is almost too good to be true. Uncharted has put together most everything you could possibly need and organized it in a way that is easy to understand, even when you are stranded in an emergency and aren’t thinking straight.

What We Like

  • The Shell: As a standalone backpack, the shell is an amazing add on that’s durable, utilitarian, and is clearly something you could put to use in your everyday life.
  • The Layout: The insert is incredibly well organized and spacious, meaning not only that it’s easy to pack and unpack items, but also that most of the compartments have space to add a few items of your own.
  • The Items: As far as quality goes, everything inside is mid to high-range, leaving you feeling comfortable that when you really need this gear to work, it will.

What Could Be Improved

  • The Carry: For such a well thought out shell design, the carry system is less impressive. While the shoulder straps and back panel are comfortable, the one size fits most design has a significant potential drawback. The waist belt, when cinched down as tightly as it goes, just barely made for a comfortable fit around my 32” waist. Anyone with a smaller waist would find the waist belt to be unusable.
  • External Storage Options: Uncharted added on a few exterior pockets and straps, but it would also be nice, in a survival scenario, to have more ways to attach things to the outside of the pack as necessary. Adding on a MOLLE system in particular would be a huge benefit in this regard.
  • Price Tag: It would be a disservice not to mention that you could put this kit together yourself for less money. That would require you scouring the internet for comparable products, but if you don’t have $565 to fork out for a survival kit, it is possible to piece a comparable kit together yourself and save a few bucks in the process.

Conclusion

There’s no telling when you might find yourself in a survival situation, but one thing’s for sure, you’ll never regret being prepared for one. No out of the box survival kit is perfect, and you’ll likely have to add a few items based on your personal needs. But as a survival system, the SEVENTY2® Pro does a great job of giving you and one other person some very useful items to help you survive for 72 hours in a neat, tidy package.

You might find yourself saying that you could put this together yourself, and do it better, for less money. While that might be true, the reason you’re here is because you haven’t done it yet. Which is all the more reason to get this kit sooner rather than later.
